The difference between this and the cover is the audience it's made for. This version is a product of the 80s, with it's pop-punk beat and rather upbeat feel. For people who complain about the depression of the cover, consider it's setting; this song would be completely inappropriate in the context of Donnie Darko whereas the slower, more morose version fit the mood of that part of the movie.

The point I made was that Gary changed to mood of the song so much (for the worse in my opinion, for the better in yours) by slowing it down and moaning it out bitchily that he should have change the title to "Sad World" so as to not be confused with the original.

I think the original and the gary jules version are both great, but I think for the time this song came out, this version was more appropriate if that makes sense. I personally identify on a more personal level with the Gary Jules version however.

Just bloody computerised crap and drum machines, then dance music, house music, then i cut my ears off... The 80s should be 'my decade', being 16 in 1981, but i quickly got sick of the crap and went back to the 70s and 60s. I'm still discovering gret music from bands from then Of course the downside is that often they are all dead!
