i will say that she does look like she has naturally fine edges. Her hair doesn't look coarse at all (I didn't see a before) in which case this video is not for me. If you have coarse NON-RELAXED hair like me I will tell you that he is right about just using the hot comb. I also follow the hot comb up with a fine tooth comb right after applying the heat. Hope this helps someone.

what would you suggest for those who don't relax, but have hair that EASILY reverts from sweating on the scalp? quick tip : i tell my clients who wear weaves ,braids,locks,and cornrow styles to clean there scalp with "sea breeze" when they cannot wash so the scalp is still clean and will not grow fungus! scalp fungus can come from leaving styles in too long you will notice an odor on the hair/scalp and a pastey film on the scalp.

OMG!!( im not on anyones side but as a professional stylist) for hygene hair/scalp should be washed offten to keep the scalp clean ,recondition hair and refresh your style.its not healthy to pile on product after product on the hair collecting dirt and debris for several weeks or months.when you wash is your choice but clean hair is healthy&clean hair grows.its really sad that black women are loosing thier hair because of myths that damage hair&scalp due to miseducation! thanks hope this helps.

wow Iris, looking at your hair wet i can see we really DO have similar textures! =) now... this is TOTALLY different to me than the other vid. the water is sizzling off your hair but not making that "snap crackle pop" noise. it actually looks like when i blowdry my hair (because i don't dry it 100%). so... you offically have convinced me, that this technique CAN work when done correctly. =) (and almost convinced me that hotcombs are not the devil, LOL)

I remember having my hair pressed as a little girl (8)...I used to get so excited when it was over...I would get out of the chair and flip my hair and I'd smile from ear to ear...I guess my hair was to my waist at one point. I think a little girl should only have it pressed for special occasions, but, that is my opinion. Age wise, well, some girls as young as 2, but, I think going on 10 is a good idea...they will want a certain hair style, perhaps.

I think pressing a little girls hair is okay as long as you make sure you keep her hair healthy. I had heared before that pressing is actually quite safe for natural hair as long as you deep condition and protect with enough oil. Is that wrong. From what I can see you are a great Mom and shining example to them. Please don't straighten their hair! LOL. But really, I have met a few friends, very very few, whose mothers never allowed them to straighten their hair and it is GORGEOUS now because they never had heat damage AND they trully know how to care for their own hair. They've never depended on a professional stylist (natural or otherwise) to help them with the exception of special occasions when they get something really fancy.

You have a good thoughts. I think of straightening hair as just another styling option. My daughters know how I adore their hair. They get compliments almost every style I give them in their natural state. Every style they get is special, and, I'm sure if I straightened it (WAY in the future), they will get compliments. Its almost as if little black girls getting their hair straightened is a rite-of-passage. SO sad. We're showing and telling them that to wear your hair in it's natural texture (not straight) signifies being special and having maturity. I really agree with you ntrbuttrly22. When we press little girls' hair for special occasions we reinforce the idea that that straight hair is 'special' or desirable. What child wouldn't want to wear her hair 'special' everyday? Especially if she's getting compliments about it. Why not figure out how to style her hair in a special way while keeping her natural texture. ALSO we need to pay careful attention to ourselves and how we frame pressing hair when speaking about it.

I had my hair flat ironed or "pressed" one time at a shop and once side of my hair didn't revert back. i had to cut it. I said never again. im not gonna sacrifice my hair for a week's hair style. rather just get a wig. i was so upset! i cried. as for lil girls, for special occasions, i'd do some type of elaborate natural style or a braidout so her hair can be stretched. i'd just let her be natural for all occasions cuz her is already spe cial :)

The same thing happened to me when I went to flat iron my hair...I had to cut off like 3 inches of split ends!!! I wonder what is causing that? I have talked to other natural women who say the same thing: that their hair will be fine in the 'fro, but when they go to straighten, its a hot mess!!

Thanks you! I really don't like it when my hair is heavy or weighed down so I try to limit the amount of products that I put in my hair. I don't put anything in my hair when I straighten it. Prior to curling it, i put in a very light hairdress preferably by Mazani, and a very light oil. Either my dads jojoba Oil, or ardgan oil. The key is to keep it light.

@myronmlawing, no, not really. Pressing combs aren't bad, ceramic irons are just better for the hair. Ceramic irons put moisture into the hair instead of taking it out.

Thank you! Im happy the video helped. I actually apply a pressing aid to my hair prior to blow drying. I personally use Luster Silk Hair Culture to help make my press last. Just keep in mind that the base of any great style is a great shampoo and conditioner. If your looking for body, make sure you check Part 2. Ceramic flat irons give you tons of body and a natural healthy shine.

I actually prefer pressing with the flat iron now. The ceramic iron usually leaves the hair softer, shiner, and its actually a lot healthier for the hair. Pressing with the hot comb is so time consuming. Thank you so much for the kind words, they are very encouraging.

In response to my recommendation to use Dudley Pressing Cream when you press your hair with this "electric pressing iron"; the product can only be purchased from a licensed beautician. Hope that this helps you with your hair.

Hair protection is key, I use Silk Elements Hair Protection Spray, Silk Elements Hair Mousse (which protects the hair as well), Silk Elements Polish (that protects) and the pressing cream I use called Dudley's Hair Pressing Cream is a protectant as well. The electric combs have been out for some time now, yes. However this video is to give an alternative to flat irons, which have also been out for awhile. This technique will not change your hair texture permanently. I, myself, can revert back to my curly natural hair when I wash it. The pressing cream is waxed based so it doesn't melt to burn hair or scalp,it protects it. Years ago they did use oil and a heat comb that would burn it. Don't use oil on your hair if the comb burns you, however. :)

Hi don't get me wrong but the electric iron has been around awhile now, I've had one over 5yrs now, but from watching several other vids, the complaint seems 2 b about changing your hair texture permanently and using oil based products which burn ur hair. My pressing comb is goldplated and has a control settings, but with all the talk of ceramic/tourmaline products. I'm chillin' out on the fence with the whole heat application stuff wish u luck with ur choice
