Wow, I cannot believe that you are 50! You look fabulous. But I guess that is in our genes. I have not done a video yet (got to get a new webcam) but I turned 48 last Wednesday and do not look over 35. Thank you for the great info. I saved this video so I can look at it often. I did the bc on last Saturday so I will have a ways to go, but you gave great info that I will definitely keep in mind.

Your vids are a blessing to me because I live in the desert as well and know how difficult it is to keep natural hair moisturized there! I normally wash my hair 2 to 3 times a week and have experimented with different lines. I have a naturally curly friend here and we often compare notes on which lines and ingredients work for us (and have come to discover that what works well for me doesn't necessarily work for her and vice versa)! I thought my mom was crazy when she told me that something about the water in AL worked wonders with her hair (she moved from IL)...I guess it was what isn't in the water that has helped a lot. She's right though...with all of the humidity, my hair grew quickly! Thanks for the tip of looking at the hard water map!

I agree that moisturizing w/ water is dependent on where you live, here in central Texas the water is HARD !! Right now, a cut piece of aloe vera plant rubbed all over my hair w/ jojoba (sounds like "ho-ho-ba")& coconut oil & Olive oil is working for me...April, your hairstyle is adorable !!! have fun at the Grand Canyon !

Great advice. It took me a really long time to realize that the reason why my hair wasn't staying moisturized is the water. I would keep spraying my hair with water, and it was just getting dryer and dryer. I live in Chicago-an area with extremely hard water. People should really Google hard water maps if they aren't aware of the condition of their water.

Worked well. When I was kid my mom used to use those rollers and wet set her super long hair..after she removed them she took a large paddle brush and brushed all the curls straight back and then pushed them forward with her hands.. her hair looked amazing. It was like Laura's from General Hospital! Good memories! :)

Looks lovely! So are you going to wear the curls like that and let them fall naturally or are you going to wrap your hair to smooth it out more? I'm thinking about doing this since I just bought a hair dryer bonnet, but I just need to get the right size rollers. I always thought the jumbo rollers were mainly used for this technique, but the ones you used seem to work just fine. Thanks for the video!

@Apriluv7779 Can't even tell you have acne but you should try pure Aloe vera gel. YOu can buy the plant for just a few dollars and take the gel straight from there and use a little on the face everynight after you cleanse you face and see how that helps after a few months. I would continue to use the shea butter and other natural oils.Beautiful hair by the way!

I actually love the wet set as one of my low maintenance styles and have seen great results. I use the smooth magnetic rollers and sit under the dryer for 30 minutes so I get a more straight look. However, I did not have great results when I tried to wrap. Possibly because I didn't know what the heck I was doing!! I've never had a wrap go well. LOL Love your videos and blessings.

That product was my staple when I was relaxed for roller wraps. I have also used it a few times since being natural when I straightened, which is very rare. It gave very smooth and shiny results for a reasonable price. I use the ponytails/cheat rollerset. I think you will be more pleased this time around. I can't wait to see the end result!

I see what you mean. I started cowashing awhile ago and my hair and scalp had so much build up. Now I just wash, deep condition, then a week later I co wash. They I start the cycle all over again...wash, dc, week later co wash. This works for me! I also sometimes before a cowash I pour warm water with ACV in it over my head and rinse it. Gets build up off before cowashing. It helps.

@missree1995 The shampoo does not dry out my hair. I have used the shampoo to remove product build up. It does cleanse my hair; removing all the build up from conditioners and other hair products. Removing the build up is important in order that your deep conditioners work better.

I really want to protect my hair this summer since it's now brushing my shoulders but the humidity keeps my twists from drying completely after 24 hrs. The humidity does however keep my hair soft, but too much = rough, swollen strands. It's very interesting how climate and season can affect the hair. Taren196 was talking about how the NYC weather swells her hair. I guess the variations allow for new style discoveries! I'm going to have to find styles to accommodate my big hair I guess.

Co-washes are great, but conditioner does leave something on the hair even after rinsing and eventually will cause build up..even faster if you use some as a leave-in. So I think it's good to use a shampoo during the week at least once or twice if you want everything off of the scalp and hair. Your braid out looked really nice BTW!

@QueenLoreal I had the same experience with Aubrey's Honeysuckle Rose conditioner. I couldn't detangle with it after using a shampoo but it worked well after a co-wash.

Glad you did this vid. Yes, I agree about the conditioner washing. My hair is low porosity and last summer I had a terrible time with products coating my hair and tangling ends. I later found out that I had to alternate my co-washing with shampoos, esp. in summer when everything seems to stick to my hair. Your explanation here is going to save lots of curly/coily heads. If you're still looking for a co-wash, the CJ Daily Fix is good and so are some Giovanni cond. Let us know if you find another!

I wash my hair at least 2x's per wk.. I like to wash with shampoo (sulfate free) 1x each week before doing a rollerset, flat iron or just to remove product buildup. The other time(s) I may just use conditioner to wash. I like Suave's Daily Clarifying shampoo. It has sulfates but doesn't feel like it strips the hair.

Co-washing is good for detailing but I love detangling with infusion. I learn that from FreeWorshipFreeWors. I decided I need to clean my scalp with shampoo. I love using the Lush shampoo bars especially the Squeaky Clean bar. It looks ugly and the smell when it is dry is OK, however when you wet it I Love the smell. God bless you for being a 8th grade teacher. WOW, the kids can be a challenge at that age.

I really don't think it's about what type of conditioner you use. This whole cowash thing came about as Naturals started feeling the poo was stripping the hair, so the condish wash was born. The condish washing added slip/better detangling but, for me anyway, too much buildup, and itchy scalp. I'll stick w/sulfate free poo once a week, followed by good condish. Maybe poo'ing more often with more humid weather now.

try an apple cider vinear rinse to remove the build up and cleanse the scalp. that will save you from using shampoo and continue your condish wash. just a suggestion. :)

Not sure how often you conditioner wash, but maybe you should use a clarifying shampoo on your hair. Product build up can prevent future products from working the way they are supposed to.

I had that problem too with build up. I didn't want to use a sulfate shampoo so I mixed a bit of baking soda and water and used that to clarify and it did the trick. Recently I've used Alberto VO5 conditioner as a conditioner wash. It doesn't cause build up and so far it cleanses my natural kinky curly hair pretty well.

Hey! Wanted to add that the V05 started to build up and dry my hair out overtime. Think it was the benzyl alcohol, which isn't quite a moisturizing alcohol. Could be other ingredients. Also like other's suggested, try the filter and then you can fill up a spritz bottle with the water or fully drench your hair in it, instead of relying on the Komaza spritz. Also my hair tends to feel best when the products marinate for a few days and I simply re-wet vs. rinsing them away with conditioner.

But, yes, I have that as a possible cause. I will soon find out and let you know what happens. I will wait until the weekend to see what happens. You should watch Kimmaytube's video on co-washing...it could be build up. Also it may not be the product, but the fact that there is build up. If there is build up, moisture cannot penetrate to nourish the hair.

Lots of leave-in moisturizer followed by a layer of hair oil will not only add moisture and protect my hair from the elements, but will also pretreat my hair prior to a clarifying wish and deep condition.

@10girlygirl Good Morning. I'm not quite clear on your question. What are you using to straighten your hair. If you are using too much heat, your hair my be scorched. I suggest using an electric flat iron with a heat dial. I flatiron my hair at 300F.Perhaps you should shampoo your hair and use a reconstructor/deep conditioner before flat ironing again or better yet, give your hair a break and stay away from flat irons to give your har a break from heat.

Hi Apriluv7779, Thanks for posting. I did go and watch the your video on the Kinky-Curly products. My biggest frustration is that I'm spending money here and there trying to find the "right" product for my hair but nothing seems to work. It seems like no matter what I try my hair ends up with white flakes dried in my hair and a big, frizzy, puffy afro. I want to wash and wear my hair but I'm having problems finding products that will penetrate my hair and hold it without frizziness.

@dreabatyah No I do not use the Curly Girl method for maintaining my hair. I shampoo and deep condition once a week. Between shampooing/deep conditioning, I condition wash my hair swith conditioner. Just a suggestion....be careful with only clarifying with acv because it can not remove cones. ACV is a great clarifier but only a sulfate can remove cones. I would hate to see your beautiful hair get robbed of any moisture :)

Love your bun! I know what you mean about the dry ends when straight. I've never straightened, but when I did a ponytail rollerset, my ends were horribly dry, while the length was moisturized. The day before I washed I added oil like you, to pre-poo. I'm sure the curls will return :]

I totally understand. Its amazing the difference between how I feel curly vs how I feel straight. Its like I dont even feel like myself, Im paranoid and a little less at ease with myself, I also dont feel as attractive. Its just incredible. I know this is a random but I bet that is how indiginous africans felt when they were forced to cut their hair and begin manipulating it to fit the slave culture requirements. Miserable.

i agree! where i live, especially now that it's warming up, flat ironing & blow drying my hair is just not worth it! it gets soooo humid & hot here that the moment you step foot outside you might as well just wear your curls..the weather plays a huge role when it comes to a lot of naturals straightening their hair! love the top (or dress) by the way...you should do out of the day videos, lol..your style is always on point...love it!! :o)

Yeah Blow drying with a diffuser occasionally is okay for my hair...but the flat ironing is what did me in and kept my hair so dry and broken.....I am much happier as a curly girl as well. I need to try the Moku Oil ...I love putting oils in my leave in conditioner seems to keep my scalp and hair well moisturized...I normally use castor oil and jojoba oil mixed with my leave in.

I have those same Komaza Care Products and love them as well, I just recently straightened my hair, now I'm back to curly again, I definitely felt like I was damaging my hair straightening it, even with the Moku leave in.....it's a section of my head that tends to itch as you mentioned with yours, I use the scalp conditioner, and sometimes mix tea tree oil with that if it itches enough....no skin conditions there, it just itches, I'm thinking about investing in the Maxiglide hair steam

You did a great job, especially with it being your first time. I do these all the time. Did you start out with a wet set?.....sorry, I think I'm watching your vids out of order, lol. I did see you using flexi rods but i didn't know if you used them on wet hair. When I do these I use magnetic rollers . They come out beautiful with a lot of body and curls on the ends. Great job and don't get discouraged! I'm like you, I never give up. I keep trying until i get it right!

here's what you can do...wrap it again and leave it wrapped as long as possible...then use a wig brush while unwrapping ...w/thick hair, the more you wrap, the better the results... I use a flat iron with a heat dial and I am careful not use high heat on my hair. Leave-in conditioners in which the first ingredients is water blended with Emoillents (natural oils) works well for me. I also dampen my hair with a spray bottle of water then apply a leave-in conditioner or a carrier oil (avocado, olive, almond, coconut) to seal in the moisture. Water is the best moisturizer! I condition wash twice a week between my weekly routine of shampooing/deep conditioning.

@anaturalbeauty3 Good Morning! When living in a dry climate, I find avoiding glycerine keeps my hair from drying out so much. Glycerine is a humectant. Humectants draw moisture from the hair. Because the climate is so arid in Las Vegas, humectants (glycerine) will draw moisture out of your hair. Glycerine is wonderful in a climate that is humid but I find using hair products with glycerine, dries my hair out to the point it feels like straw.

I use it on top of the KCCC as well on day 2 and so on to moisturize and soften the crunch of the KCCC as well. Some say it's kind of greasy, but I find that if I just use less its not. I don't know if you're seen other reviews on an alternate conditioner for Knot Today...but I've heard (from Taren916) that Tresseme Naturals conditioner is a GREAT alternative to it. It works WELL with the Custard. Just a heads up. Thanks for your videos, you are such a pleasant person. :)

Hi Apriluv7779, As an online retailer myself, I think the shipping issue was a software mistake, not bad intentions on behalf of the seller. I can ship up to 4 lbs anywhere in the U.S. for 10 -12 dollars (priority mail). If I were you, I would contact the store to have them address the issue. I agree, you need 6.5 bottles of Knot Today for every custard jar! But I love the KT & use it for many purposes besides curly styles. Your hair is so long! Can't wait to see the dry results!

I love the Knot Today Leave In....But the Curling Custard leaves my hair too crunchy and Jheri Curl looking....I don't like the Spritz at all...it comes out in a straight stream and goes everywhere....I get mine local at Whole Foods so no shipping cost...Just not my products of choice...The KKCC does define...It just defines a little too much for me...Great Review!

I found out recently that we can reap all the nutritional benefits of broccoli if it is lightly steamed moreso than eaten raw. That also goes for spinach. If eaten raw our bodies cannot absorb the vitamins and minerals that spinach has. Therefore, it will only serve as fiber. That is not entirely a bad thing, but it just seems such a waste to eat such nutritional food and not reap all the wonderful benefits.
